Pros And Cons Of Foam Insulation

Insulation is an important part in construction of a building. It prevents losses of energy, reduces the bills and improves the appearance of the walls. There are various types of insulation materials, and in this article we will deal with foam insulation.

Types of foam insulation

Generally, there are two types of foam insulation. There is spray foam, which is made from different materials and polyurethane foam is most commonly used. The second type of foam insulation is in the form of rigid foam boards, made from foam plastic. Both types have their application and purpose, as well as their positive and negative sides.

Spray foam insulation

Spray foam is not used on large wall surfaces. Instead, it is used for insulation on small surfaces and to fill in cavities. Lots of energy is lost through the cavities on the roof, between walls and doors and windows and other through other holes in the walls. Spray foam deals with these cavities, and you can use it to fill in specifically these small areas where the insulation is needed.

When the cavities are filled with spray foam, there are significantly smaller losses of air, and consequently it is much easier to cool or heat the space. What’s more, spray foam provides insulation from the sound as well, because of its airy structure.

What is negative with spray foam is that it is very aggressive for health before it is dry and firm. While it is still liquid, it can cause irritation of the eyes and damage to the respiratory organs. This is why the workers need to be well protected while sealing the cavities with the spray foam.

Rigid foam insulation

Rigid foam insulation is used for insulation of the larger surfaces of exterior walls. It is made from foam plastics and shaped as boards, which are attached to the surface of the walls.

The main benefit of this type of insulation is that it provides excellent protection from weather conditions. As a result, a lot less heat or cold gets into the building through the walls. This makes the home much more energy efficient and immensely reduces losses of energy and money.

Some types of rigid foam boards are also water resistant, which further improves the protection of the exterior walls. Furthermore, this makes them suitable to be sued even in the parts of the home under the ground.

As far as disadvantages are concerned, there are several worth mentioning. First, placing rigid foam boards require you to fill in all the wall cavities first. Without this, rigid foam boards will not be as efficient. Then, this insulation type is prone to sun damage. It is affected by UV light, so it must be well protected before the installation and after it.

Another disadvantage is the price. While basic boards are not as expensive, they cannot be used in some special cases such as insulating underground parts of the building. On the other hand, waterproof and other special types of rigid foam insulation are more expensive.
